The first Film Seed Festival “Powered by Peanuts” was harvested in October 2022.
All the energy requirements, in terms of electricity and nutrition for the three nights of gatherings and film projections were produced by the cultivation of a peanut crop in the field that the festival was consequently hosted.
A small piece of land in the Livadi area of Tinos, was planted with peanuts Arachis Hypogaea.
The cultivation was technologically aided by Agenso smart agriculture sensors monitoring water use and weather data.
Once harvested half of the crop was converted to peanut oil and then to biodiesel by Act4Energy, technological spin off of the Democritus University of Thrace department of Environmental Engineering .
This biofuel in turn provided with the necessary electricity in order to power a film projector, speakers and lights .
The remaining half of the harvest was cooked and roasted by local cooks and served as nutritional cinema snacks for the festival audience.
Film Seed Festival official film selection can be found here and directions to get here, on this link.
Film Seed Festival was planted in May 2022 in a field at the location Gonia, in the largest agricultural area of Tinos Island, known as Livadi. The Livadi area is the fertile valley of a very small seasonal river, it has light sandy soils and a relatively good underground water storage making it ideal for plants that suit these conditions, peanuts being one of them as they prefer light soils and warm sunny climates. Between the thick reed wind-breaker walls farmers cultivate vegetables and especially artichokes for which the location is known for. A sculptural structure containing smart agriculture sensors and an outdoor film projector, is placed in the center of the field for easy access to its functionality, visually marking the field the festival is planted in. The one hectare peanut crop was collectively cultivated by several local farmers who harvested approximately 200 kg of peanuts in the last days of August.
The transesterification process, by which the vegetable oil is turned into biodiesel, can be realised in collaboration with a university lab or environmental engineer to yield optimal results. The first Film Seed Festival collaborates with Act4Energy, a Democritus University of Thrace Spin-off company, to produce the biodiesel required to power the screenings of the festival. By-products of the production and transesterification process can also be used to achieve a zero-waste result - for example the leaf litter remaining after harvest for compost, or non-toxic glycerin that can be used to make soap.
Film Seed Festival welcomed upwards of 350 visitors between the three nights of projections treating them to wonderful documentary viewing as well as peanut cinema snacks including, raw shelled peanuts, roasted shelled peanuts, boiled peanuts, salt and oregano roasted, as well as the traditional "pasteli" peanut bars with local thyme honey, and peanut cookies made with the flour that is left over from extracting the peanut oil.
Film Seed Festival was developed during the S+T+ARTS residency program, commissioned by the Onassis Foundation and in collaboration with Agenso and the techno-startup ACT4ENERGY of the Democritus University of Thrace.
The project is carried out with the support of Onassis Stegi Cultural Center within the framework of the Regional S+T+ARTS Centers – Repairing the Present, of the European Commission.
